The Solaris[tm] 8 Operating Environment System
Administrator II course provides students with the skills
necessary to administer Sun systems running Solaris 8 in a
network environment. Students will be taught how to maintain
Sun systems, configure and troubleshoot the Network File
System (NFS), and configure the Network Information Service (NIS)
environment.

Prerequisites |

To succeed fully
in this course, students should be able to:
Install the Solaris Operating Environment on a
stand-alone system including update patches
Understand and perform booting and shutdown
procedures and options.
Log into a UNIX® system and change passwords,
add users, and set up file permissions
Make directories, setup partitions, and manage
files
Use the Solaris device naming conventions to
configure and name devices

Redirect all core dumps to a single core dump

Administer disks using a volume management
utility

Environment |
Describe network capabilities
Describe the function of the network models
Define the layers of the network models
Compare and contrast the seven-layer ISO/OSI
model to the four-layer TCP/IP model
Identify which protocols fit at each layer,
and briefly define the protocols
Use block diagrams to depict encapsulation and
de-encapsulation
Demonstrate knowledge of how hostnames, IP
addresses, and MAC addresses are interrelated.
List the current system configuration using
the ifconfig -a command
Monitor for network activity using the netstat
-i command and the snoop -a command.
Define the function of the syslogd daemon
Configure the /etc/syslog.conf file to define
where to log events
Extract information from the /etc/syslog.conf
file to identify the types of events, including facility and
level the will be logged by the system
Modify the configuration file to re-route logs
to an alternate location
Parse messages to syslog

Identify the physical path name differences
between standard Solaris file systems and virtual file systems
List the potential advantages of any virtual
disk management application
List the basic difference between Solstice
DiskSuite[tm] and Veritas Volume Manager

concatenated virtual file system
List the main advantage of using a striped
virtual file system
List the three utilities used to create,
check, and mount file systems
Use Solstice DiskSuite[tm] to extend or
concatenate a file system
Module 5: Introduction to Swap
Space and Pseudo File Systems |
